Get to know me

Hi, I’m Kate McDougall, a Clinical Hypnotherapist based in Strathaven, supporting adults, teenagers and children who are struggling with anxiety, stress and confidence challenges. Many of the people I work with are high-functioning individuals who appear to cope well on the outside, but internally feel overwhelmed, stuck in unhelpful patterns or constantly battling anxious thoughts. Through clinical hypnotherapy, I help people understand how their mind works and develop practical tools to regain calm, confidence and control. I regularly support clients with:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Sleep problems and insomnia
  • IBS and stress-related digestive issues
  • Weight management and stress habits
  • Smoking cessation
  • Phobias and fears

Sessions are available from my clinic in Strathaven or online, making hypnotherapy accessible wherever you are.

Supporting Children and Teenagers

Alongside my work with adults, I have a strong interest in helping children and teenagers experiencing anxiety, confidence difficulties and school-related stress. Before becoming a hypnotherapist, I worked as a teacher for 17 years, many of those years supporting pupils with additional support needs. This experience gives me a deep understanding of the pressures young people face today. I regularly work with young people experiencing school anxiety and Emotional Based School Avoidance (EBSA), an issue that is becoming increasingly common. Using a combination of hypnotherapy, mindfulness and practical coping strategies, I help young people develop confidence, manage their emotions and feel safer returning to school and daily life. Hypnotherapy can be particularly effective for children and teenagers because their minds are naturally open to learning new patterns and coping skills. I support children and teenagers with:

    • School anxiety and Emotional Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
    • Confidence and self-esteem
    • Anxiety and worry
    • Phobias and fears
    • Sleep difficulties
    • Exam stress
    • Emotional regulation

Working with young people is something I feel particularly passionate about, and it’s incredibly rewarding to see them regain confidence and begin to thrive again.

My Journey Into Hypnotherapy

My journey into hypnotherapy began through my own experience with anxiety and burnout. When I first discovered hypnotherapy, I was struck by how powerful it was. It didn’t just involve talking about problems — it gave me practical tools to understand and manage my mind more effectively. The changes were life-changing. I have since seen the same positive impact within my own family. Hypnotherapy helped my children overcome phobias such as fear of dogs and dental anxiety, and I was also able to support my mother through severe insomnia. Looking back, I could never have imagined that the therapy which helped me during such a difficult time would eventually lead me to running my own hypnotherapy clinic in Strathaven.

My Training and Professional Standards

I hold the Hypnotherapy in Practice Diploma (HPD), widely recognised as the gold standard qualification in hypnotherapy. I have also undertaken further training in:

    • Paediatric Hypnotherapy
    • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)
    • Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
    • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
    • Mindfulness
    • EMDR

This allows me to tailor sessions to each client using a combination of proven therapeutic approaches. For your reassurance:

    • Registered with the National Council for Hypnotherapy (NCH)
    • Fully insured
    • PVG checked
    • Professionally supervised

These standards ensure safe, ethical and professional care for every client.

My Approach

I believe the mind is one of the most powerful tools we have, yet most of us are never taught how to work with it. When we learn how to understand and guide our thoughts and emotional responses, the changes can be remarkable. Many clients come to see me feeling stuck, overwhelmed or unsure of themselves. Through hypnotherapy they often leave feeling:

  • calmer
  • more confident
  • more in control
  • and capable of far more than they once believed.

Helping people rediscover that confidence and possibility is the most rewarding part of my work.

A Little More About Me

I live in Strathaven with my husband and our three children. I was originally born in South Africa, and I’ve always enjoyed meeting people from different backgrounds and hearing their stories. Outside of work I love spending time outdoors, especially hill walking and being near water, which I find incredibly restorative.
